International Museum Day, May 18

International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977. Each year, a theme is decided on by the Advisory Committee of ICOM, the International Council of Museums. This event provides the opportunity for museums to be – as in the ICOM definition of museums – “institutions in the service of society and of its development”.
Celebrations are held each year on or around May 18, and each country celebrates its own specific traditions and conditions, and organises events in the spirit of ICOM’s motto:
Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples.
The theme for 2010 is MUSEUMS FOR SOCIAL HARMONY.
In Guyana, The Department of Culture of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be celebrating International Museum Day this year by holding an exhibition at the University of Guyana Tain Campus, from May 18-21.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony will deliver a talk on Guyanese Culture at this venue on Wednesday May 19, at 11:00 h.
