Members of the Haile Selassie I Theocracy Reign Ivine Order of Nyahbinghi left State House last evening satisfied after seeking an audience with President Bharrat Jagdeo for his assistance in the construction of their Tabernacle and to inform him of their proposed awareness programme.
Accompanied by five other members, I-elect of Treasury, Ras Binghi Trug Ras Addis Asher, told the Government Information Agency (GINA) after the meeting that the group intends to obtain legal documentation for their Secretariat and Cultural Tabernacle land in Linden and other locations.
The President has promised to support the financing of the lighting project for the Tabernacle in the Linden Central Tabernacle ground, and gave the assurance that land will be made available for the establishment of the group’s secretariat to be located in Georgetown.
This (the Secretariat) is very important to us building our community and social life,” the Treasurer said.
Their awareness programme, which targets an audience of law enforcement agencies, schools, private and public sectors, and all religious and cultural groups in society, is being organised with the hope of achieving mutual trust and confidence from the Government and larger society towards the Rastafari community in Guyana, and secure the rightful future for the enhancement of self confidence and personal growth of youths in the growing world of technology.
The group used the occasion to distance itself from the negativity that was induced after public utterances were made by one of its members pertaining to the failed ganja march on May 10.
The group has opposed what it considers prejudicial utterances expressed by Vice President of the Guyana Rastafari Council, Ras Simeon Selassie, on May 6, at the Square of the Revolution, noting that even though the proposal for the march was brought to the Rastafari community, it was never approved collectively by the elders.
“The attempt to stage a march was purely from an individualistic perspective,” the group said as it expressed regret over any ill-feelings that may have been caused to any section of society.(GINA)
