Man arrested in body in car trunk affair

Police last night said that they have arrested one man, and are looking for several others who are said to be close acquaintances of the dead taxi driver whose charred remains were discovered  in the trunk of a burnt motorcar on a dam at Palmyra Turn, East Canje, Berbice, on Sunday, May 9, 2010.
The chassis number retrieved from the car yesterday matched the one on the taxi Roy Mitchell Persaud, called “Otis”, was driving when he disappeared.
Commander of ‘B’ Division, Steve Merai, said that following the discovery of the charred remains, a woman reported her loved one missing and assumed that the body, burnt beyond recognition, is that of  New Amsterdam taxi driver, Roy Mitchell Persaud called “Otis”.
The man went missing last Friday; he  worked at the New Amsterdam car park, where he was last seen Friday morning.
Persaud, 32, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, a father of two, is known to them since he has had several brushes with the law, the police say.
Meanwhile, Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy on the taxi driver’s remains.
The Government pathologist in Berbice, Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan, is on leave and the post mortem will have to be done when Dr. Nehaul Singh, who is posted in Georgetown, is free to do it.
