WPO honours long standing PPP member for sterling contribution

THE Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) recently honoured stalwart and long standing member of the PPP Mohamed Khan of Region 2 for his sterling contributions at a simple ceremony in his home. The 58-year old former Guyana Rice Producer’s Association (RPA) Rice Extension Officer who was also Deputy Mayor of the Anna Regina Town Council and a GAWU Field Secretary who championed the causes of farmers and workers during his tenure. He was well known for his contributions for the restoration democracy in 1992.He fearlessly represented his party at the polls during 1992 and was the first person overlook the military ballot box at the Anna Regina Police Station and escorted it to Georgetown during all the disturbances and delivered it to comrade Ralph Ramkarran at the Election Building in Croal Street. He is indeed a true patriot to his country and party.
In July 20, 2004, he suffered a motorcycle accident while on duty for his employer the Guyana Rice Producer’s Association (RPA) and is now disabled. Mr. Mohamed Khan was called upon to serve the Anna Regina Town Council on August 4,1994 as a councillor  and worked his way up and finally became the Acting and Deputy Mayor. He appeared before the B.O. Adams Commission of Enquiry for the PPP/C Election day violence in 1992 and held the gate at Port Mourant Congress until all his comrades and Ministers of the government find safe places in the compound while his comrade Balram Kanhai was shot and killed at Rose Hall .Mr Khan has always worked assiduously for his party since he believed that this is the way forward. His accident came as a shock to all. His exuberance and simplicity encouraged those who came into contact with him at all levels to be steadfast and relentless under pressure and to be hopeful while working to achieve better goals.
He is remembered by all as a fighter, all the way, in the interest of the party he served. Mr Mohamed Khan still believes if given the right therapy and treatment he was receiving in India he would be able to walk again, at the simple ceremony was WPO representative Ms Juliet Coonjah and party organiser Omesh Persaud.
