BIBI Noorjahan Azeez, 40, of Lot 67 Duncan Street, Georgetown, was on Tuesday given until May 18 to make restitution in a money for jobs scam.
In the meantime, however, she was remanded to prison, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, on two charges of obtaining by false pretence.
Azeez had pleaded guilty, with explanation, to the offences, particulars of one which said that on April 10, with intent to defraud, she took $173,000 from Maharanie Bissessar, by falsely pretending to be in a position to secure a travel ticket for the woman’s son, Balram Bissessar.
The other charge said, on March 12, with intent to defraud, Azeez got $219,000 from the same virtual complainant by falsely pretending she was in a position to acquire a seaman’s visa for Balram Bissessar, knowing it to be false.
The defendant claimed she met some men who told her they were from a cruise ship and asked her to recruit persons interested in employment on the vessel.
Azeez said she gave the cash she collected to the men, but is willing to repay the sums and needs some time.
