Classes at Chase’s Academic Foundation, which is housed in the Guyana National Co-operative Union Ltd. building at 178 Waterloo Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, were suspended following a fire yesterday.
Fire believed to be electrical in origin damaged records stored in a locked room at about 11:00 hrs yesterday while classes were in session.
Teacher Orwin Perry told the Guyana Chronicle that a male teacher who was in the washroom saw the blaze and raised an alarm and the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene.
He added that the students quickly evacuated the lower flat of the building while the firemen battled and contained the fire.
When the fire was doused, the upper flat of the three-storeyed wooden was scorched, but some of the records were salvaged by employees of the Co-op.
More than 100 students were sent home until today when classes are expected to resume, teachers said yesterday.
They praised the firemen who responded promptly and who did a good job at containing the fire.
