Businessman charged with causing death of NCN operator

BUSINESSMAN Arnold  Sewpersaud, 28,  of Lot 156 Mc Rae Street, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. It is alleged that he drove his motor pick-up, PHH 1025 in a manner dangerous to the public, killing National Communications Network (NCN) transmission operator Muneshwar Seelall.
Sewpersaud appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo yesterday and was granted a total of $400,000 bail at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, too.
He also ordered to lodge his passport with the Court.
In addition, the defendant, who wore a neck collar and had to be supported by others on his appearance, was slapped two charges of failing to render assistance to injured persons, the deceased and his pillion rider, Latchman Singh.
Sewpersaud faced another charge of failing to report the accident to the nearest Police Station or a Police Constable within 24 hours of the occurrence.
In his bail application, Defence Counsel Joel Edmond-Persid informed the magistrate that Sewpersaud is not happy that a life has been lost.
Replying to Police Prosecutor Satrohan Dayaram, who had objected to the bail grant, Edmond- Persid said Sewpersaud is not a flight risk, neither will he tamper with any witness or commit similar offences if allowed pre-trial freedom.
The lawyer claimed Sewpersaud was dragged out of his submerged vehicle in an unconscious state and did not regain consciousness until the following day, at Fort Wellington Hospital, West Coast Berbice, still suffering injuries to his spine.
Edmond-Persid said Sewpersaud is currently taking medication for his injuries and, if incarcerated, would be prevented from getting proper care.
Defence Counsel reported, too, that Singh, the pillion rider is in a stable condition at Georgetown Public Hospital.
The case will be called, again, for report, on May 31.
