IT seems like the much anticipated mid-year rains are here and the Mayor and City Council has once again failed the citizens of Georgetown to avoid flooding and the accumulation of water in busy streets, business , homes and other public places.
The M&CC really needs to revamp and boost its planning and engineering department to avoid this recurring occurrence that disrupts the normal lives of people who frequent the capital city of Georgetown to conduct business, educational and other activities.
Effective drainage of the city can be attained, and the Mayor and City Council needs to be better prepared for high intensity rainfall as an effect of climate change which is a worldwide phenomenon with different and opposing extremes of weather.
However, I am pleased that there have been no major reports of water accumulation within farming communities to ensure farmers are allowed to reap their rice crop, despite the heavy rainfall experienced over the past two days. As such, while we are not yet out of the rainy season, it would be fitting to commend the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies to continue their hard work to minimize flooding and water accumulation.
The mid-year rains have only just begun and all of us need to play an active role by working with the relevant authorities to secure our surroundings from flooding and water accumulation. Further, I would like to impress upon all Local Government Authorities who are in the frontline to prevent flooding and water accumulation to be alert and responsive.
Meanwhile, we as citizens need to play a more active role to be alert and responsive to authorities and avoid the habitual dumping of garbage in canals reducing the efficiency of drainage. All are involved, all are consumed.
It seems M&CC has once again failed Georgetown citizens
