Fined asthmatic with marijuana must do community service

LLOYD Caesar, of Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was fined $15,000 with an alternative of 42 days imprisonment, on Tuesday, for illegal possession of a narcotic. In addition to the fine imposed at New Amsterdam Court, Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo ordered that the convict undertake two months community service at Central Police Station, in that town.
Caesar, after pleading guilty, told the Court he is asthmatic and would boil and drink portions of the cannabis sativa (marijuana) for relief from the ailment.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said Caesar was in an open yard, last March 27, when ranks on mobile patrol saw him acting suspiciously, having discarded something on the ground.
Police Cadet Officer Williams picked up the transparent ziplock plastic bag and it  contained leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant, that weighed four grammes, the Prosecutor related.
