LINDEN athletes representing Upper Demerara District turned the tables on defending champions East Coast Demerara, when they chalked up 321 points to 293, as West Coast Berbice placed third on 149 and East Bank Demerara finished on 128 among the contesting districts at this year’s 10th annual Linwest Games, which was run off at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Sunday. There were a number of double winners while others performed well to gather enough points in the Multi-events categories to emerge as the top performers.
National sprinter Chavez Ageday representing East Coast Demerara won the100- and 200-metre races, but had to share the spotlight with Linden’s field athlete, Ryan Crandon, who won the discus and shot put events.
The Girls’ Under-20 Champion was West Coast Berbice’s Nikita Joseph who, like Chavez, showed a clean pair of heels in winning the sprint double.
In the Under-18 category Malcolm Walcott of East Coast Demerara carted off wins in the 800 and 1500m middle distance races to be declared the Champion Athlete while among the ladies it was shared by West Coast Berbice’s Onecia Bacchus who won the 800 and 1500 m events. East Coast Demerara’s Lisa Bowman won the javelin and discus events.
In the Under-15 Multi category Linden’s Roylon Rawlins was the best performer among the girls, while Joshua Fraser was top among the boys, representing West Coast Berbice.
Among the Under-13 Multi-events performers, the top boy was Linden’s sprinter Compton Caesar and teammate Nikita Andrews among the girls.
Another double winner was Linden’s Scottie Obermuller who won the Under-15 Boys’ high and long jump events.
Other winners of the day included Linden’s Bevan Alert in the 400m Boys’ Under-20 race while among the Girls the winner was another Linden athlete Keyandra Zephyr.
In the Under-18 400 metres race the winner was East Coast Demerara’s Samuel Doris among the boys while for the females the winner was Nickie Samuels of East Coast Demerara.
Linden’s Tyshon Bentick won the Under-20 Boys’ 1500m while Under-18 sprinter Sherwin Michael of East Coast Demerara took gold in the 100m as did teammate Deja Smartt over a similar distance.
The Boys’ Under-20 800m winner was Kareem Aaron of West Coast Berbice while among the females in that category the winner was Kdaria Blackette of East Coast Demerara..
The Under-20 Girls’ 200m race was won by Linden’s Leniece Dennis while West Coast Berbice’s Quincy Nicholson won for the males.
The Under-20 High Jump event was won by Linden’s Parrish Cadogan. The female winner was Khadesha James of Linden.
The Under-15 long jump winner was Khaleria Harris of Linden while in the Under-13 category the female winner was West Coast Berbice’s Rebekah Nurse.
