GSA Smalta Easter Junior Tourney
GUYANA’S top junior players produced quite a show on Sunday when the curtain came down on the Guyana Squash Association’s Annual Smalta Easter Junior Team Tournament at the Georgetown Club courts. According to reports, Jason Ray Khalil’s Different Strokes held off a surprisingly tough challenge from Be Aggressive, led by four-time Caribbean champion Keisha Jeffrey, to finish the tournament undefeated and take the title.
It was also a tight fight for second place with The Herd and Gravity Challenged going at it with the knowledge that a win would secure second and could possibly challenge for first if Different Strokes faltered.
After the first four matches were complete the encounter was tied at 2-2 before Jason Van Dyke became the hero of his team by outlasting a determined Alysa Xavier 3-2.
South American Games bronze medallist Ashley Khalil led Run For Cover to a surprise win over Kayla Jeffrey’s Pit Bulls, with Joven Benn pulling off the stunning upset over Nyron Joseph in five brutal games.
In his closing remarks, Tournament Director Deje Dias thanked the sponsors Smalta through their local distributors Ansa McAl for their continuous support of the junior programme.
He also thanked the coaches, players, parents and The Georgetown Club for making the tournament possible.
Matthew Phang was given the sportsmanship award while Larissa Wiltshire was judged the most valuable player of the tournament.
