19-yr-old killed in Meten-Meer-Zorg traffic accident

A motorcar struck and killed a 19-year-old West Coast Demerara lad last Saturday night and injured his childhood friend who is said to be in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Ramesh Persaud and Christopher Gittens, both of Railway View, West Meten-MeerZorg, were riding a bicycle on the Public Road not far from their homes when they were struck by motorcar PMM 3981.
Persaud, who was towing Gittens, succumbed to head injuries at the Best Hospital. He was transported there by a GuySuCo ambulance.
The dead man’s father, Mohanchand Persaud, told this newspaper yesterday that his son and Gittens went to purchase food at a nearby Chinese restaurant and were returning home when the tragedy occurred.
He explained that he could not recognise his son’s body at the Best Hospital mortuary, as his face was severely lacerated.
He said Gittens is in an unconscious state at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Persaud lamented that police officers did not offer him any details concerning his son’s death but only asked him to turn up today at the hospital when it is expected that a post mortem will be performed.
It is reported that the driver of the vehicle is in police custody.
Persaud said he is currently putting up a new house and was doing so with the help of his deceased son. The “hurtful part”, he said, was that hours before his death, his son was telling him which one of the bedrooms in the house he wanted.
All the Chinese food was spilled on the road, Persaud related.

He described his son as always being helpful.
