THE double-header of the annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament which was scheduled for Wednesday evening at the GFC ground has been rescheduled to tomorrow evening at the same venue. According to tournament organiser Lennox Arthur, the inclement weather that prevailed on Wednesday, forced him to reschedule the two matches to tomorrow evening.
The feature match, which is set for a 20:00 h start, will see defending champions Pele of Georgetown tackle Seawall FC of West Demerara while from 18:00 h, Riddim Squad of Georgetown will oppose Grove Hi Tech of East Bank.
The two winning teams will join Uprising and Fruta Conquerors in the quarter-final round.
When the tournament got under way on Sunday at the same venue, Uprising and Fruta Conquerors both registered 2-0 victories over Sunburst Camptown and New Amsterdam United respectively.
Like the opening night, tomorrow evening’s double-header promises to be keenly contested, as all four teams that will be on show will be seeking to make it to the quarter-final round to enhance their chances of winning the $500 000 first prize along with the Mayor’s Cup.
The second-place team will receive $200 000 while the team finishing third will take home $150 000. Several individual prizes are also up for grabs.
For tomorrow night’s feature game, Marvin Joseph and Sheldon Holder will lead Pele’s challenge, with support expected from midfielder and playmaker Travis `Zorro’ Grant along with Devon Edinboro.
The defence will be marshalled by Solomon Austin and Quincy Adams, while Sean Johnson will perform duties between the uprights.
Seawall FC’s response will come from Selyon Josiah, Jaime Lopes, Garlon Lewis, Zevon Atkinson, Ademi Hoyte and custodian Marvin Joseph.
Riddim Squad, who played unbeaten during last year’s Georgetown Football Association Division One league and have been promoted to this year’s Premier League, will be seeking to continue their unbeaten streak and will depend heavily on siblings Sheldon, Seyon and Steffan Hope, as well as Lyttleton Ramsey, but they will have to be wary of Grove Hi Tech, a team capable of creating big upsets.
