Shooting murder accused threatens suicide on being remanded

TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Stravo Evans, of Lot 1075 Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a murder charge and was remanded to prison through April 16. Particulars of the capital offence with which he is charged said Evans murdered Pascal Johnson in Georgetown last January 4.
On being sent on remand, the prisoner threatened to hang himself and said those in the courtroom they will soon read about his death.
He declared he prefers to die and go to hell because this country has no justice.
Evans said the person who told Police he is the killer never attended an identification parade but he turned himself in, accompanied by a lawyer, because he was not running from the law.
The accused admitted he was before the Courts on several occasions in the past but has since changed his life and is busy working in the interior.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the identification issue is not relevant, as those who witnessed the crime are available to the Prosecution.
The Prosecutor said advice was also sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The magistrate advised Evans to pray and give his life to Christ not commit suicide.
The victim in the case was shot in the neck at Side Line Dam in the city after an argument over a woman.
