THANKS to the continued benevolence of the Oasis Café, the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) will be well clad as they represent Guyana at the upcoming Caribbean Scrabble Championships which are scheduled to be held at the Port-of-Spain National Library, Trinidad and Tobago from April 2 to 5.
President of GASP, Moen Gafoor, was on hand along with National Champion Abigail McDonald to receive the 24 shirts for the eight-member team from the proprietor of the Oasis Café, William Walker, yesterday at the Carmichael Street location.
Apart from the uniforms the team will have the pleasure of enjoying free breakfast on the morning of their departure, Tuesday, March 30, at the Oasis Coffee Bar that is situated on the upper level of the departure lounge at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
According to Gafoor, this is the continuation of the Oasis Café’s ongoing pledge of sponsorship in support of scrabble as this is the second time that the entity is providing sponsorship of this nature. The GASP president expressed his gratitude over the assistance they received yet again from the entity saying that he is truly grateful.
He gave other instances of the magnanimity that has been continually showered upon his association by the Oasis Café saying that GASP players are allowed to practise in the cafe every Sunday and that there was even a tournament that was held at the café in the past.
As far as the competition is concerned, it was revealed that the team, which consists of Ewart Adams, Abigail McDonald, James Krakowsky, Leon Bellamy, Fred Collins, Ulric Harris, Orlando Michael and Moen Gafoor, is a very promising combination. “We are much more optimistic, as this is the first time that we have the legitimate top eight players,” said McDonald.
Walker said that he is happy to support the scrabble team and he wished them the best of luck. He described the relationship between his business entity and GASP as a good one.
“We have been doing this for the past two years and we have even hosted a tournament here at Oasis,” Walker continued. He said that scrabble conforms well to the atmosphere of the cafe as “scrabble and coffee go well with each other”, and he also is of the opinion that scrabble is generically a good game.
He also disclosed that the relationship is one based on mutualism whereas GASP members are also good customers of the Oasis Café.
