DEMERARA Cricket Club’s (DCC) Jamal Hinckson recorded the first ton, while Third Class’ P. Persaud and Everest Cricket Club’s Javed Rasheed grabbed the first five-wicket hauls, as action in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised Haier Cup second division limited overs competition commenced yesterday.

Six teams namely Transport Sports Club (TSC), Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), Everest Cricket Club (ECC), Guyana Defence Force (GDF) University of Guyana (UG) and DCC recorded first round victories over their respective opponents.
At DCC, the home team faced the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC), who were held to 209-8 from their 40 overs, with Dexter Solomon 64 (4×6, 3×4), Collis Butts 40* (2×4), J. Moore 24 (3×4) and chairman of selectors of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Clyde Butts 21 (3×4) being the principal scorers.
Edward Burnett and Jermaine Horatio led the bowling for DCC with two wickets each for 17 and 29 runs respectively, after which Hinckson’s explosive and unbeaten 124 which was decorated with 11 maximums and eight fours, Kester Hardcourt’s 31 (2×4, 1×6) and Jahron Byron’s 29* (5×4) guided them to 214-2.
At the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) ground, TSC pummelled Ace Warriors into submission, before coming away with a massive 212-run victory.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, TSC piled up a mammoth 346-9 from their 40 overs, with skipper Shawn Massiah leading the way with an unbeaten 77 (10×4, 3×6). He received support from Stephon Sampson 49 (9×4, 1×6), Shafeik Ishmael 42 (3×4, 1×6) and Keith Haynes 24 (5×4).
Bowling for Ace Warriors, Clevon Douglas took 4-61 and skipper Abzal Gafoor 2-52, but when they took the crease, they found the pace of Massiah who returned to grab 3-27 from five overs and the spin of Ishmael and Azim Azeez who took two wickets each for 35 and 38 runs, too much to handle and crumbled for 134 from 23.2 overs.
Victor Bacchus 39 (7×4, 1×6), Delon Azore 29 (4×4) and Akeem Williams 22 (2×6, 1×4) were the principal scorers for an out-of-sorts looking Ace Warriors line-up.
At the PSC ground, ECC also had a massive victory, defeating Diplomats by 201 runs in their encounter, thanks to the batting of Raiyad Sattaur and the bowling of Javed Rasheed and skipper Abhilash Dhookie.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, ECC scored 295-8 before their overs expired, with Sattaur hitting seven fours in his 77, while David Harper 65 (5×6, 4×4), Dhookie 48 (5×4, 1×6) and Surendra Hiralal 24 (2×4) supported.
Samjeer Ramdeen and Nigel Bentick took two wickets each for 38 and 42 runs respectively for Diplomats, who were bowled out for 94 from 20.5 overs, with only M. Mentore 36 (2×4, 2×6) and Ramdeen 15 getting into double figures against Rasheed (5-33) and Dhookie 4-41.
At MSC, the home team arrested PSC in their encounter, even though Rawle Browne narrowly missed scoring a ton for the lawmen.
Batting first, PSC were bowled out for 175 from 26.3 overs, with Browne hitting seven fours and the same number of sixes in his 97 and received support from Andre Stoll who struck one four and one six in his 21, against the bowling of Jermaine Joseph and Neil Barry Jr who took 4-30 and 2-19 respectively.
When MSC batted, skipper Danny Narayan struck nine fours in his 67 and along with Delon Moffat, who struck three fours in his 45, guided MSC to 176-7 from 39.1 overs, as Jason Heyliger tried desperately to guide his team to a come-from-behind victory, when he grabbed 3-8 with his off spin.
At the Camp Ayanganna ground, the GDF ensured the defence of their territory with a 29-run victory over Third Class, despite P. Persaud grabbing 5-4 from 2.2 overs with his right-arm leg spin.
Batting first, GDF were bowled out for 172 from 35.2 overs, with Montel Gilead and Terry Fraser contributing 37 each. Gilead hit three fours and Fraser two fours and a maximum and Marcus Watkins 29 (4×4).
A. O’Neil took 2-21 in support of Persaud but when Third Class, who contributed 54 extras to the home team’s total, batted, they were bowled out for 143 from 34.5 overs, with A. Bernard 41 (6×4) and V. Ramsoondar 18 (2×4) being the leading batsmen, while Ceyon Noble 4-17 and Marlon Young 2-6 did the damage with the ball for GDF, who conceded 36 extras to their opposition.
According to reports reaching Chronicle Sport, UG defeated the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in their encounter which was played at the UG ground, but no scores were available, while the same can be said for the Georgetown Cricket Club versus MYO Vikings encounter.
