FABIAN, Orson and Aaron Foo are three young entrepreneurs who are relatively new to the eco-tourism business.
But these guys, who are brothers, are bent on making their mark in the industry.
With the Rupununi Rodeo a little over two weeks away, the three youngsters were last week finalizing plans for their second package tour to the Rupununi, a six-day trip with stops at some of Guyana’s most beautiful hinterland spots, plus an opportunity of experiencing the rodeo, and enjoying a one-day trip to Brazil.
According to the itinerary, patrons leave Georgetown at 20:00h (8pm) on Thursday April 1 and can expect to be back in the city by 14:00h on Tuesday April 6.
And guess at what price? An affordable and unbelievable $50,000 each person (with supper only)! Or $60,000 per person with three meals daily for the duration of the tour!
“This excursion is more of a gift than about profits,” Fabian told the Sunday Chronicle. “We have more such affordable trips/excursions coming up,” he added.
The trio disclosed that the entire trip and its highly-competitive price-tag are made possible by the goodwill of relatives who live at Lethem.
The buses for the excursion will be coming from Lethem, and will be driven by drivers experienced in driving on the Linden-Lethem Road.
The transportation arrangements comprise the use of a fleet of at least eight minibuses leaving outside Demico House on Thursday April 1 at 20:00h and returning to Georgetown six days later on Tuesday April 6.Orson took the time to point out, too, that the buses for the excursion are specially equipped for the long haul.
They are all air-conditioned, and the seats are of the bucket type, which are much more comfortable for passengers than those normally used in minibuses on shorter routes. “For passengers, much more legroom too,” Fabian interjected.
The meals from April 2 – 6 (for those who plan taking the $60K package) will be provided by relatives residing at Lethem. The three organizers will also be getting back-up support from their parents, both of whom will be a part of the event.
Speaking on what excursionists would need for travel, Fabian said: “A valid passport; (this would be needed to enter Brazil on the one-day tour); rough clothing (jeans, boots etc); outdoor camping equipment (tents/ sleeping bags/ bug spray etc); medication; disposable eating/drinking utensils ; flashlight and toiletries, and not much else.”
He outlined the itinerary as follows:
Thursday April 1, 2010 at 20:00h – Depart Georgetown for Lethem from Demico House opposite the Public Buildings, to arrive at the Kurupukari Crossing on the upper Essequibo River at 06:00h (6am) on Friday. Then follows a side-trip to the Iwokrama Rainforest for a walk along the Canopy Walkway, and on to the Oasis Restaurant at Annai for a brief stop, before crossing the North Rupununi Savannah to Lethem. The travellers will arrive at Lethem at 16:00h on Day One, Friday.
The remainder of the itinerary is as follows:
Saturday April 3 at 08:00h – Visit Rodeo
Sunday April 4 at 08:00h – Depart for Kumu Falls at the foothills of the Kanuku Mountains for a swim and relaxation, then return to the Rodeo/camp.
Monday April 5 at 06:00h – Depart for Boa Vista, Brazil for a day-tour
Tuesday April 6 at 05:00h – Depart Lethem for Georgetown.
Tuesday April 6 at 14:00h – Arrive Georgetown.
