A post-mortem on the burnt remains of newspaper vendor Jacqueline George has revealed that she died as a result of an incised wound to the neck.
The body of George was found among the debris of her home at ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, which was destroyed by fire on Sunday.
Since the murder/arson, George’s reputed husband, the prime suspect, has gone into hiding and was still at large up to press time.
George’s bound body was taken from the rubble of her home early Sunday morning shortly after her reputed husband, Godfrey Stewart, was observed leaving the house.
The relationship between Stewart and George, 57, was a stormy one, and according to reports, he often threatened to end her life.
Police reported that about 2:50 am on Sunday morning, a fire of underdetermined origin destroyed George’s wooden home.
Neighbours saw the building ablaze and alerted the Guyana Fire Service. The firemen put out the blaze and found the burnt body in the debris.
George was on many occasions a victim of domestic violence, and it is believed was incensed by her threats to take his name off the land transport and to sell her stall at the Stabroek Market where she sold newspapers for more than 30 years.
