Street lights to brighten up Stabroek, other areas

A number of additional street lights are to be strategically installed around the Stabroek Market area and at a number of the minibus and car parks in the city, before year-end.
This move, according to Ministry of Public Works and Communications Traffic Safety Engineer Nigel Erskine, is all in the interest of public safety and is also aimed
at stemming the nefarious activities carried  out by some people in the dark.
Erskine, in a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, spoke of numerous complaints of shoppers being attacked and robbed at night time as they shop in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market, as well as the increased incidence of pickpockets at work at the various bus and car parks.
According to Erskine, there are plans to install some 30 lamps in the area, and some other sections, including Hincks Street and Commerce Street.
Also on the cards  to further improve safety on the roadway is the construction of several new foot bridges and sidewalks in some areas, and the installation of road signs. The signs will remind motorists of the specified speed limit. The maintenance of traffic lights and the widening of road shoulders are also on the cards.
Erskine further disclosed that the Ministry of Public Works will this week award five contracts for continuous maintenance of street lights.
The areas identified for this are Georgetown, Georgetown to Mahaica, Mahaica to Rosignol, the East Bank and the Essequibo Coast.
The contractors to whom the contracts would be awarded for a period of one year would be responsible for ensuring that the street lights are always in working order, he said.
