Defaulting customers pay up $150M to GWI

Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) yesterday announced that customers in arrears have been taking advantage of the payment plans offered by the company, and since the announcement of the disconnection campaign, $150M has been paid up.
Public Relations Officer Mr. Timothy Austin told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that customers now owe $6.3B in arrears.

He however urged customers to visit the nearest GWI officers and arrange a suitable payment plan.
Mr. Austin stated that what they have realised is that persons who are in receipt of accumulated bills were afraid to visit GWI; but they have since worked out a payment plan with GWI, and he urged others to come forward.
He added once they do this, their service will not be disconnected..
Mr. Austin told the Guyana Chronicle that from the time the disconnection campaign was announced, the response has been fair so far, especially in the city; but in others areas many with accumulated bills are yet to visit GWI.
Mr. Austin announced that since the start of the GWI disconnection campaign on March 3, 2010, they have disconnected in excess of 1,500 customers.
He said they have disconnected customers in Festival City, North Ruimveldt, West Coast villages, Crabwood Creek in Berbice and on the East Bank of Demerara.
Mr. Austin added that the re-connection fee is $6,000.
