GUNMEN yesterday staged a daylight robbery at Agricola Post Office, East Bank Demerara, escaping with $300,000 after assaulting an audit clerk.
A Police report said it occurred around 11:00 h and was perpetrated by three young men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
The trio entered the post office and held an employee, Marcia Braithwaite, and audit clerk Delon Bobb at gunpoint and demanded cash.
Police said Bobb was assaulted during the heist and was later treated at Georgetown Public Hospital and sent away.
An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, however, told the Guyana Chronicle that two gun toting men were seen, from across the road, talking on cell phones before kicking the door open, entering the building and demanding money.
When this newspaper reporter visited the scene, they were not allowed inside and postal staffers refused to talk about the incident.
However, Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) Public Relations Officer, Ms. Yolaskee Jervis, in a press release, said a small amount of cash was taken but did not state how much.
The release said GPOC remains dedicated to its staff and customers and assured the public that it will continue to earnestly maintain the vital services it provides in a secure environment.
The Police are continuing their investigations.
