U.S. robbery convict jailed for drug trafficking here

UNITED States (U.S.) citizen Levi Kulsum, 23, was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $2.8M for drug trafficking. He pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton, to the offence,  particulars of which said, earlier in the day, at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, he had three kilogrammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah said Kulsum was an outgoing passenger on a flight to the U.S. when he was seen acting in a suspicious manner and a search of his luggage yielded the narcotic in a false compartment of the suitcase.

The Prosecutor said, after the substance was tested, the prisoner then admitted that it belonged to him and confessed that he had previously served a prison sentence in the U.S. for robbery under arms.
