Cuban doctor, woman in murder/ suicide

The bodies of a Cuban doctor and a woman were taken away from a city  apartment the doctor was renting yesterday afternoon. The case appears to be one of murder suicide

The physiotherapist was identified as Guillermo Mortinez, in his late 50’s, and who rented an apartment at 136 Eping Avenue, Bel Air Park, Georgetown.

The woman was identified as Gomattie Persaud, 47, of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.

Her naked body, with three stab wounds, was found on a mattress.

Dr. Mortinez’s body was discovered on the bed.  It is believed he ingested poison.

He was last seen alive on Monday; but yesterday when patients showed up to see him there was no response from his apartment, and this prompted them to call the caretaker at about  17:00hours.

It was then the gruesome discovery was made. The bodies had started to decompose.

Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, who was at the scene, told reporters the victims died on Monday, and the woman’s body bore marks of violence.

The bodies were transported to Lyken’s Funeral Parlour yesterday afternoon after the police had combed the apartment.

Detectives took away a garbage bag with some items, a lady’s handbag and a plastic bag with what appeared to be a bottle and some other articles.

A friend of Dr. Mortinez’s, Dr. Raoul (only name given) told reporters that he only came in the country from Cuba on Wednesday night and was shocked at his colleague’s death.

He said the doctor lived previously in Kingston, and later moved to Eping Avenue. He worked at the Woodlands Hospital.

Dr. Raoul stated that the two of them would usually go out for coffee and beers.

He said the dead man would send money to Cuba for his family.

The dead man was described as a very friendly person who did not seem to have problems.
