Another GRA clerk charged with theft

ANOTHER clerk has been charged with theft of money from Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). Tamayo De Mendonca, 29, of Lot 1659 Congress Drive, South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded not guilty to charges that said:

* between September 11 and 30, 2009, while being employed as a clerk of service, he stole $162,730 which he received on behalf of GRA and

* between October 1 and 30, 2009, he stole $466,160 from GRA while being employed there as a clerk of service.

The defendant was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, who said he is not a flight risk and had been employed at GRA for five years.

The lawyer claimed De Mendonca was recently transferred to a department where he did not have enough knowledge to handle the job and it was another person in authority who stole the money.

Bail was set at $150,000 and the case was postponed to April 22.
