Miners bodies in city for post mortem

The bodies of the two miners who perished in a cave- in of an open mining pit at Mahdia, Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) were brought to the City for post mortem examination yesterday.
The mine where the accident happened and an adjacent one were closed down by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) pending further investigations.
A reliable source said that the adjacent mine was closed down because the investigating authorities felt that it was susceptible to a similar type of slope shift which caused the
tragic accident Tuesday.
Miners Rohan Hibbeizt,  a 35-year-old Jamaican,  aka ‘Jamakey’ of Long Creek, Soesdyke/Linden, and 32-year-old Karran Roopnarine of Triumph, East Coast Demerara , were working at the bottom of an open mine pit reportedly fifty feet deep when the walls  caved in on them.
The accident  reportedly occurred around 15:00 hrs during heavy rainfall. Five other miners were in the  pit but they managed to scramble to safety.
The  accident was yesterday being investigated by both the Police and  officials of the GGMC.
