Brown spins Jamaica to first innings lead

PROVIDENCE, Guyana, (CMC) – Leg-spinner Odean Brown claimed a career-best eight wickets for 54 runs from 28.4 overs to secure first innings lead for tournament leaders Jamaica over the Combined Campuses & Colleges in the WICB regional first-class championship yesterday.
Brown, who celebrated his 28th birthday five days ago, ripped through the CCC as they slumped to 161 all out, in reply to Jamaica’s modest first innings total of 202 on day two of their day/night fifth round match at the Guyana National Stadium.
Only left-hander Kjorn Ottley, with a fluent top score of 44, and opener Kyle Corbin, who hit 34, produced any defiance.
Jamaican skipper Tamar Lambert supported Brown, claiming two for 21 from 13 overs with his accurate off-spin.
By close, Jamaica had reached 37 for two in their second innings to stretch their overall advantage to 78.
CCC began well after limiting Jamaica, with the openers forging a positive reply.
Corbin and Omar Phillips took the CCC to lunch well poised on 48 without loss, but it all fell apart in the final two sessions as Brown dominated.
Corbin, who hit five fours off 80 balls, fell in the second over after the break. The 19-year-old pushed forward to Brown, and had his off stump rocked as the leg-break turned past his edge.
Brown claimed Phillips one over later as the left-hander chipped a low return catch at 52 for two.
The lanky Jamal Smith never settled and provided Brown with his third scalp as he feathered an edge to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr.
Left-hander Ottley and captain Floyd Reifer battled to add 48 for the fourth wicket before both departed just before tea.
Reifer was lbw to Lambert for 10, and Ottley, who struck six fours off 85 deliveries, spooned a sweep at Brown off the glove to first slip.
CCC limped to the break at 115 for five and the demise continued on resumption.
Chadwick Walton was bowled by Lambert before Brown wrapped up the tail swiftly.
Austin and Gavin Wallace were lbw, while Kantasingh played down the wrong line and was bowled.
Last man Khismar Catlin holed out to long-on leaving Kevin McClean unbeaten on a fighting 24.
McClean returned with the new pink ball to stall Jamaica’s advance as he removed Brenton Parchment cheaply for the second time in the match.
Kantasingh added the scalp of Danza Hyatt, who chipped a return catch off the leading edge.
CCC and McClean throught they had a third wicket in the final over before the close as Bangladeshi umpire Gazi Sohel ruled Donovan Pagon caught at gully off the glove.
But some brave umpiring saw Sohel overturn his decision, after Pagon appeared to show him the mark the ball made on his forearm when he was heading off.
Pagon survived to be unbeaten 13 at the close, with night-watchman Andrew Richardson on seven.
