Media reports in Suriname have quoted public statements about the Guyanese New River Triangle, made in Parliament by Surinamese politicians including members of the former Government and a President. A press statement from the Office of the President stated, “The public statements currently reported in the Surinamese press have disclosed the intentions of the then Government to invade Guyana and seize its territory in the New River Triangle area.”
“These press reports quoting statements made by Surinamese Government leaders, outline Suriname’s hostile intentions of invasion of Guyana”.
“Those intentions were known, coming in the time of the internationally condemned expulsion the licensed company, CGX, operating a rig engaged in oil exploration in Guyana’s waters.
“The Government of Guyana takes these revelations seriously, especially, since Suriname still continues to agitate locally and internationally for the annexation or the New River Triangle area, a sovereign part of Guyana territory,” the statement said.
“These adventurists should know that Guyana was, and is prepared at all times to rebuff invaders. Would-be adventurists should know that the borders of Guyana are fixed, internationally recognised, and inviolate,” it stated.
