Two persons are now in police custody pending charges after they were intercepted with two kilogrammes of suspected cocaine. The two, Guyanese Indrani Bhola of No. 78 Village Corentyne, Berbice, and Kingsley Mgbeahurvika, a Nigerian national, were intercepted at the No. 78 Village Foreshore Backtrack Landing on January 20, 2010, by the Berbice Anti Smuggling Squad (BASS). According to BASS Supervisor Mohamed Rassack, the drug was discovered on the person of the woman who admitted that the illegal substance was hers. Her male companion denied having any knowledge of the drug when first questioned, but subsequently changed his statement after further questioning in Georgetown by the police on Monday last.
The Nigerian was also found with a Venezuelan identification card in his possession bearing the alias Victor Ozoekme.
Further, on Wednesday last, BASS officials, acting on a tip-off, discovered eleven kilogrammes of suspected cannabis sativa on the aforementioned foreshore under a sawmill stage protruding into the foreshore.
However, no one was held. The drug was believed to have been placed there for pickup. The police are currently investigating both matters.
