Police accidentally shoots pregnant teenager

Police accidentally shot a pregnant 19-year-old Buxton, East Coast Demerara, fruit vendor in Water Street, Georgetown, yesterday morning.

Shot and injured is Earlene Morgan of 64 Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara.

The teenager’s mother, Evette Morgan, 48, also a fruit vendor who sells just outside of Big Gill’s Store, Water Street, Georgetown, told the Guyana Chronicle that at about 08:00h she and her daughter arrived in the city with some mangoes which they had purchased from Mahaica, also on the East Coast Demerara, and were standing on the road when they heard a single gunshot.

Evette Morgan said that she suddenly heard her daughter crying out in pain, and she slumped to the ground.

The fruit vendor explained that Earlene was shot just above the hip. She is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Evette Morgan added that within a few minutes she saw a man dressed in civilian clothing, who later identified himself as a policeman, running at them with a gun in his hand.

The woman said that the police explained he is attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) and was pursuing a suspect down Water Street and he accidentally shot her daughter.The vendor said that her daughter was shot from behind and they were not even aware that the policeman was pursuing a man.

Earlene Morgan is the eldest of six children and usually accompanies her mother to sell fruits.

The woman said Earlene has been selling at the location for the past 11 years.

Yesterday, when the Guyana Chronicle caught up with her in Buxton, she was preparing to visit the hospital where her daughter was told that she is having a baby girl.

In Buxton yesterday, scores of villagers expressed their concerns regarding this latest accidental shooting by a policeman.
