CHEMICALS theft defendants Michael Laltoo, 29, of Glasgow, East Bank Berbice and Cowan Rohit, of Suzanne, Corentyne, were each granted $10,000 bail yesterday, at New Amsterdam Court.

The two men appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, charged with stealing the liquids from Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Rose Hall Estate.

Laltoo is employed as a member of the estate spray gang and Rohit is its foreman.

It is alleged, by the Police, that, last November 11, Rohit hired a motor car to transport the stolen booty from Providence, East Bank Berbice, to Number 19, Corentyne and, about 07:30 h the following day, acting on information received, GuySuCo personnel arrested a chauffeur who had, in his possession, several plastic containers with 10 litres of different chemicals, valued $39,699.

The defendants were arrested after the driver was questioned as to how he came to have the substances.
The case has been postponed to January 29.
