FORTY-YEAR-OLD Jeetendra Neeron, who is alleged to have, in a drunken stupor, beaten his three-year-old toddler daughter, Darshana, with an axe handle, has been refused bail on a wounding charge.
He was remanded to prison yesterday, after Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, before whom he appeared at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, heard that the girl is still a patient in New Amsterdam Hospital, suffering injuries to her forehead.
The magistrate ordered a probation report on the defendant for February 12.
Neeron claimed the child fell off the stairs but Police Inspector Fazil Karimbaksh, prosecuting, said investigations revealed that the defendant is an alcoholic who would, often times, inflict injuries on members of his family whenever he is under the influence of liquor.
The charge against Neeron is that, last December 12, at Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the virtual complainant, with intent to maim, disable or cause her actual bodily harm. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
