THE Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) has landed an overseas sponsor for this weekend’s tournament as the local players prepare for a major regional event in March.
Saturday’s tournament is sponsored by the popular Hibiscus Restaurant of Queens, New York and once again a large turnout is expected at the Lusignan course, East Coast Demerara.
LGC Captain Jerome Khan disclosed that Hibiscus Restaurant is owned by Guyanese and the sponsorship was secured through Edward Ajodha, an overseas-based member of the club.
According to Khan the restaurant is popular among Guyanese and West Indians including golf players who live in the Queens borough.
Over 40 golfers are expected to tee-off and they will be competing for several attractive prizes.
Among the starters listed are Esau Shamshudin, Mark Lashley, David Harry, Albert Semple, Albert Russell, Mighty Raja, Ayube Alli, Mohanlall Dinanauth and Christine Sukhram all outstanding players at last weekend’s Dask Enterprise tournament.
Also down to compete are Avinash Persaud, Patrick Prashad, Ian Gouveia, Lester Alvis, Mike Guyadin, Clifford Reis, Alfred Mentore, Bholawram Deo, Chatterpaul Deo, Kassim Khan, William Walker, Melissa Humphrey, Joaan Deo, Imran Khan, Colin Ming, Brian Hackett, Carlos Adams, Mel Sankies, Ronald Bulkan, Mike Guyadin, Gavin Todd, Geert Heikens, Ayube Subhan and Troy Codogan.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers with the best net scores as well as the player with the best gross, Nearest to the Pin, best female player and the best performer in the Stableford category.
Tee-off is at 12:15 h.
Meanwhile, Khan disclosed that Guyana will be sending a strong team to the Trinidad and Tobago Open Amateur championships billed for March 4-7 at the St Andrews Golf Club.
He also said that the players will begin fine-tuning their preparation from the weekend for the tournament in the twin-island republic.
