– Baksh
CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh has announced that the Ministry of Transport and Hydraulics, in collaboration with the Regional Administration, is spending $285M on Essequibo Coast sea defence projects.
He told the Guyana Chronicle that construction is currently in progress on an earthen embankment at Good Hope that will cost $89M.
Baksh said, when that job is completed, the area will be protected from flooding.
It was necessary because, over the years, water from the Essequibo River had undermined the dam, resulting in massive erosion at several points and, during high tides, the flow goes into drainage canals and causes floods.
Another project, necessitating $115M expenditure, will begin shortly at Zorg, Baksh said, noting that the contractor, Samaroo Investments Company is expected to construct 215 feet of ‘rip-rap’ wall and build an earthen embankment.
Baksh pointed out that the Zorg defence is very vulnerable and residents living close to the collapsed seawall have been flooded during very high tides.
A third undertaking, at Golden Fleece, for $81M, is to erect another embankment with earth and boulders, he disclosed. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
