Octogenarian died of fractured skull on ‘poodle ride

Keeping fit…
A POST mortem examination, performed yesterday on the body of 80-year-old Cyril Haley, who was struck by a ‘Canter’ truck at the junction of Norton and Chapel Streets, last Thursday, proved that he died of a fractured skull.

DEAD: Cyril Haley

His niece, Elizabeth Taylor, of Lot 1965 Boggy Peak Street, North Ruimveldt, where he was living, made the disclosure after the autopsy.

She said, on that ill-fated morning, he left home, riding, what relatives considered his cherished pedal cycle and was presumably returning when the tragedy occurred.

Haley, a former Linden bauxite company foreman, after having been awarded for 25 years dedicated service, moved to Georgetown several years ago and, until recently, lived at his sister, Mrs. Sybil Junor, on First Street, Prashad Nagar, in Georgetown, as well.

Junor, who received the news of her brother’s death with shock, said he was quite comfortable and happy with her family but, last November, decided he would move to his nephew’s Festival City house, in North Ruimveldt, too, where he would help oversee the younger children.

Junor, in her seventies, recalled that they learnt of the road fatality when her daughter and granddaughter, returning to the United States after holidaying with her, read about it in the newspapers on their way to Cheddi Jagan International Airport and immediately telephoned.

The deceased octogenarian had been involved in several road accidents while riding his bicycle but, on being previously cautioned against taking rides at his age, would jocularly remind them, that “poodling” on his cycle was a hobby and his way of keeping fit.

After hitting Haley, the driver of the motor vehicle rushed him, in an unconscious state to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where, despite the best efforts of doctors and other staff, the injured man succumbed as he was about to be taken from a CT scan.

The dead man is survived by sisters Sybil and Ingrid, one daughter, Dawn, who was expected to arrive from the U.S. last evening, several nieces and nephews.
