Three still in custody for Police money theft

THREE members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are still in custody following the Tuesday disappearance of $3.4M from the Finance Department, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that, from all appearances, it seems that the suspected theft is an internal job.

He confirmed that there is no evidence of any break-in at the building, where the cashier’s cage with the money was being kept nor were the locks breached.

Regarding the shoeprint at the scene, Assistant Commissioner Persaud said, although ranks were questioned in the ongoing investigation, detectives are yet to find the shoe matching it.

After the cash was missed on Tuesday morning, the Police, that night, said it had been in a locked canister secured in a locked cashier cage and a press release said three ranks, who were responsible for the money and the keys, were arrested and most of the others working in the Finance Department questioned.
