Murders, fatal accident, other incidents mar dawn of 2010

THE POLICE are investigating a murder and a fatal accident which occurred on December 31, last.
A release states that the murder of Wendell Tappin, 27, of James Street , Albouystown, occurred around 16:00h at Hill Street, Albouystown, and stemmed from his involvement in an argument with another man who allegedly inflicted stab wounds to his chest and escaped

Tappin was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while the suspect is said to be still at large.

Meanwhile, pedal cyclist, Ravendra Roopnarine, 28, of No.58 Village, Corentyne, Berbice died near his home at around 20:00h on the said Old Year’s Day after he was struck down by a motor car.

Police say that Roopnarine and two other pedal cyclists were riding along the No. 57 Village Public Road when tragedy struck. He was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he died while receiving medical treatment.

The driver of the vehicle has since been taken into custody and is assisting the Police with their investigations.

And, Police on the West Coast of Demerara in Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Mahase Sanichar, a 56-year-old resident of Zeelugt, also on the WCD.

The man’s body was found on a roadway in the village at about 21:35h on Thursday.

It is suspected that he may have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident, and, based on their investigations, the police have arrested three men and detained a mini-bus.

And, as a result of the quick response by the police on New Year’s Day, two suspects in an armed robbery were arrested and articles they allegedly stole were recovered.

According to the Police, at about 20:00h on Friday, Rashleigh Jackson, 26, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was standing on the roadway in front of his home when he was held up by two men armed with knives, who relieved him of his laptop computer and two cellular phones and escaped on foot.

A mobile police patrol responded promptly to the report and apprehended two men who were seen walking along the roadway in East Ruimveldt.

The stolen laptop and cell phones were found in their possession.

Charges are to be laid against them shortly.

Also, two men who made a false report that they were the victims of an armed robbery at Bamboo Landing, Upper Berbice River, on December 30, last, have been arrested by the Police.

Reports are that at about 20:30h on the day in question, police stationed at Eve Leary received a call from the manager of a timber concession along the UNAMCO road saying that two of his employees alleged that they were held up by three men armed with firearms at Bamboo Landing, in the Upper Berbice River area.

The men reported that the bandits took away a motor lorry belonging to the company which they were using at the time.

Based on that report, a team of police ranks was dispatched to the area to investigate the matter, and the motor lorry was recovered along the UNAMCO trail, about four miles from the timber concession. There were noticeable damages to the body of the vehicle.

Further investigations by the police, however, revealed that the two employees had, without permission, taken the vehicle for their personal use.

The vehicle was apparently damaged during the time and the men made the false report to cover their actions.
The two employees are to be charged accordingly.
