37 years and counting …

DDL continues relationship with KMTC
WINES and spirits giant Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) through its El Dorado brand rum yesterday continued a relationship that started 37 years ago with the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC), when they handed over a trophy and sponsorship cheque for that entity’s upcoming annual Boxing Day horse racing meet.

At a simple presentation ceremony held in the sponsor’s High Street boardroom, Wines and Spirits manager Maria Munroe expressed her company’s delight at being associated with the club 37 years after their first meeting.

“DDL is pleased to be associated with the KMTC in this venture once again. We have been supporting this meet for the past 37 years and even though we have not been involved in too much sponsorship this year, due to the economical crisis that has struck the global economy, we were still able to come forward and answer their call once again.

Hopefully, we would be able to do something bigger and better next year, as we are delighted at the way the executives of KMTC conduct their business in an efficient, professional and timely manner, something we admire at DDL,” said Munroe.

In his thank-you remarks, honorary president of KMTC, retired Chief Justice Cecil Kennard, thanked the sponsors for coming on board once again, amidst the crisis the business community faced this year.

“We are always pleased to be associated with our sponsors and for DDL to come on board with us and make this sterling contribution once again amidst the financial crisis, speaks volumes of their commitment to not only KMTC, but sports in Guyana.

This has been an ongoing exercise between DDL and us and even though the contribution was not as meaningful as we would have liked it to be in comparison to previous years, we are still grateful for their contribution, for as you know, sponsorship is necessary for any sporting event and horse racing is no different,” said Kennard.

Prior to DDL’s presentation, the Kharag family clan had already threw in over G$1M for sponsorship to one of the feature races on the day and according to Kennard, they have promised to make it an annual affair at the oldest horse racing club in Corentyne.

Horses such as Finishing Touch, Baby Boy, Star Street, El Gato, Casino Royal, Channel Boy and Indian Flag among others will be contending for the $175 000 first prize and trophy in the ‘H’ Class event which is being sponsored by DDL.
