GEORGETOWN’S BK International Western Tigers will tackle East Coast’s Victoria Kings while GDF engage West Demerara’s Seawall FC when play in the 20th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai Football Tournament continues this evening with a double-header at the GFC ground.
Tigers and Victoria Kings will clash in the feature match, which is scheduled for a 20:30 h start while from 18:00 h GDF will engage Seawall FC in the opening encounter.
With the four teams battling for the two remaining spots in the quarter-final round, football fans and supporters can expect an evening of entertaining football as the two winners from tonight’s fixture will advance to the quarter-final round where they will join Pele, Bakewell Topp XX, Sunburst Camptown, Riddim Squad, Fruta Conquerors and Alpha United.
The Tigers, whose style of play over the years continues to be attractive and free flowing, aided by quick short passes, should pose a problem for the Kings who usually rely on a fast-paced game, compounded by counterattacks.
As such, the upfront combination of Devon Millington and Nedd Fraser, ably assisted by loan player Shawn Beveney, a flank midfielder and Ryan Thomas assuming the playmaker role, gives the Tigers the edge on paper; more so, when the experienced central defenders Dillon Fraser alongside Sherman David, in addition to custodian Ron Liverpool are added to the list.
Custodian Andrew Durant, also a loan player forms the last line of defence ably assisted by Kojo Huntley and Calvin De Souza. Supportive at midfield are Aubrey Gibson and Pierre Joseph, while leading the Kings’ challenge are Winston Pompey and Orin Elias.
Stellon David, Delroy Deen, Marlon Benjamin and Royan Morrison form a useful combination in leading the army’s attack against Seawall FC who are expected to respond with Clement Brown, Cleveland Walcott, Ike Garraway and Adami Hoyte, among others.
Quarterfinals action gets under way on Friday with a double-header at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Sunburst Camptown are down to face Riddim Squad while Fruta Conquerors will take on Alpha United.
Meanwhile, when play in the competition continued on Sunday last at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, Victoria Kings downed New Amsterdam United 3-1 and Riddim Squad beat Rosignol United 2-1.
Pierre Joseph and Tichard Joseph, Aubrey Gibson scored for Victoria Kings in the 42nd, 57th and 64th minutes respectively, while Colin Bowry responded for New Amsterdam United in the 10th minute.
