ACCORDING to chairman of the Competitions Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Carl Moore, the governing body for cricket in the Land of Many Waters had a good year with regard to the running off of their competitions, irrespective of the hiccups they faced.
“I am pleased with what we have been able to accomplish this year, with regards to the organising and getting our competitions up and running. It’s been a good year for the GCB when it comes to playing our competitions,” Moore stated.
He further stated, “For me, competitions do help; for if the players are not playing competitively then how would they be able to progress and at the same time, how can the developmental policies and procedures of the GCB be observed.”
For the year, the GCB was able to organise and host the Castrol Under-15, GTM Under-19 (three-day and limited overs), Neal and Massy, President’s Cup four-team competitions, El Dorado Inter-county and the present ongoing national three-day competition.
“The only blemish we have on our record with regard to competitions, would have been the shelving of the Under-17 tournament which is a very important one, as it helps bridge the gap between the Under-15s and Under-19s and the club’s Twenty20 competitions.
But having said that, we were able to run off successfully, the schools Under-15 competition in partnership with the Ministry of Education, with the final scheduled to be held on Friday (yesterday) at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground and that in itself, crowns off a fantastic year for us, as we started that competition late and were still able to finish it within the same year,” said Moore.
The County of Berbice had a very successful year with regard to competitions being run under the auspices of the GCB, as they carted off the President’s Cup, El Dorado Inter-county and the GTM Under-19 three-day and limited overs title respectively.
Added to that, two teams from the Ancient County contested the Neal and Massy final under the lights at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with Albion Sports Club getting the better of Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar, while Demerara got some consolation when their Under-15 side won the GCB/Castrol tournament.
When quizzed on the playing of the Inter-county Carib Beer/Pepsi Twenty20 competition, Moore said the GCB was looking at playing same just before the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) would have staged their Regional T20 tournament, but that may not be the case at the moment.
The 58-year- old Moore, who has been the manager of the senior national side from 1993, said the GCB is looking at having the same programme next year, along with the Under-17s and T20 tournaments.
