Office of the President expresses sympathy on the death of the late Brindley Benn

THE Office of the President has expressed its profound sorrow at the passing of Mr. Brindley Benn who died last Friday evening.

In a statement over the weekend, OP said Mr. Benn’s death is a great loss to the people of Guyana.

According to the statement, His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo has since personally conveyed his deepest condolence to the family and relatives of the late Brindley Benn.

“Brindley was an outstanding patriot whose dedication and service to Guyana forms part of a rich and impressive history of political struggle and national liberation. His role in development of the country and democracy will forever be remembered. He worked tirelessly for the welfare of the country and nation with wisdom and merit,” OP stated.

Brindley served as Deputy Premier of Guyana and as Minister of Community Development and Education in 1957 and Minister of Agriculture in 1961.

In 1992, with the return of democracy to Guyana, he was appointed Guyana’s High Commissioner to Canada, a position he held with distinction from 1993 to 1998.

Upon his return to Guyana, Brindley served as Chairman of the Public Service Commission for three years. He was also a member of the Teaching Service Commission and the Police Service Commission.

He also served as Chairman of the Guyana Lotteries Commission and also the Appeals Board of the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The OP statement said President Jagdeo has expressed his condolences to the bereaved relatives and friends of the late Mr. Brindley Benn.
