Joe Public celebrate fifth domestic title in T&T

PORT OF SPAN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Joe Public’s unbridled title-winning form continued Friday night when they beat Caledonia AIA on penalties in the Digicel Pro Bowl final for a remarkable fifth crown in Trinidad and Tobago’s 2009 domestic season.

After a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Joe Public – with Alejandro Figueroa heroic in goal – snatched a 5-3 penalty shoot-out win and the TT$100,000 (US$15,674) first prize.

The Pro Bowl triumph added to the Big Six, Toyota Classic, Digicel Pro League and T&T FA Trophy titles they had already captured his year.

National midfielder Densil Theobald stunned Joe Public early with a third minute goal, shooting through a cluster of players to score, but Gorean Highley pulled the “Eastern Lions” level in the 35th minute to deny the Caribbean flavoured Caledonia a half-time lead.

Jamaican Caledonia goalkeeper Kevin Graham used a spectacular save – from a Highley shot — to deny Joe Public a go-ahead goal in the 81st minute.

In the penalty deciders, Joe Public shot with 100 per cent accuracy through Kerry Baptiste, Trent Noel, Conrad Smith, Carlyle Mitchell, and Seon Power.

Kareem Joseph, Stephan David, and Sherron Joseph scored for Caledonia but Keon Daniel’s effort, their first kick, was saved by Colombian Figueroa.

Caledonia’s roster included goalkeeper Graham and the Guyanese Charles Pollard, Walter Moore, and Randolph Jerome as non-Trinidadian.
