THE Government of Guyana acceded to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in December 2005.
In an effort to assist and accelerate the implementation of the recommended actions, drafted to affect the supply and demand of tobacco products and intended to inhibit cigarette smoking, a workshop designed with the objective of registering the urgency in addressing the tobacco epidemic by providing a platform inclusive of tobacco control information, among others, will be held at the Cara Lodge on Saturday 5th December from 29:00 hours to 14:00 hours.
The workshop is also intended to encourage the media to utilise its resources in developing a holistic approach and ratcheting their efforts in advocating the need for stringent tobacco control interventions by Government; to increase media capacity to research and publish tobacco control features highlighting the social, economic and health effects of tobacco use and to update media on urgent tobacco control issues, as well as encourage timely and accurate reporting.
The workshop is also geared to provide an arena for the media to readily access tobacco control information through strengthened relationships with health advocates.
Hosting the activity would be the Guyana Chest Society in collaboration with: PAHO; Ministries of Health and Education; Guyana National Bureau of Standards; and the Guyana Press Association
