STUDENTS CAUGHT WITH GANJA

– as three nabbed in another Essequibo school drug bust
TEACHERS at Charity Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast, caught three students with marijuana in their possession Tuesday afternoon.

It happened about 14:00 h and the trio were arrested by cops from Charity Police Station.

The boy and two girls had just returned after the lunch break when they were seen acting suspiciously and, following the receipt of information from another student, a search was carried out on the bags of the three suspects, in which the prohibited substance was found.

Reports indicate that ranks from the Guyana Police Force are trying to ascertain who gave the fifth formers the narcotic that weighed 20 grammes.

Meanwhile, advice is being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on possible charges.

Two weeks ago, two other female students suffered suspension, after a drug find.

Regional Education Officer Sandra Smith said she only learnt of the latest incident after classes were over and a welfare office was sent to the school yesterday to investigate.

Last month, some students of Aurora Secondary School, also on Essequibo Coast, were intercepted with the same drug in the dormitory and the occurrence was raised by Councillor Toolsie Narine at the statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), earlier this month.

Aurora Police and the Department of Education were informed and the students involved are currently receiving counselling after being suspended from classes while investigations continue.
