THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has welcomed the recent support of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) by the Alliance for Change (AFC) and has called on all to support the strategy.
In a press statement, the ruling party said, “The PPP has been a pioneer in the struggle to protect the environment in Guyana and around the world.
It stated that one of the issues that the Party contested in the 1992 General Elections was to work towards achieving social, economic, political and ecological justice.
“For a long time, the PPP has been sensitising the Guyanese nation to dangers that is being posed by climate change,” the statement reminded.
Adding, “That work has now evolved into the well thought out LCDS of the PPP/C administration.”
The party noted that the LCDS is being advocated by the highest office of the land and President Bharrat Jagdeo is not only knowledgeable but also a most “passionate advocate of the LCDS”.
“Today, our environmental strategy has begun to pay off as it is being recognised as progressive and very advanced. Guyana, a small country, is offering global leadership on one of the most, if not the most, pressing problem of our times,” it stated.
“The PPP is also pleased to see some who were either critical or silent on our LCDS, are now coming around to our position. The recent position of the Alliance for Change (AFC) in support of the LCDS is welcomed. However, it would have been more helpful if it had given that support at the very beginning,” the statement said.
It said the Guyana delegation is now preparing to go to Copenhagen and this is expected to a very important event adding, “The progressive and democratic forces throughout the world are advocating that agreements be reached to halt and reverse the effects to global warming.”
“Guyana’s position is becoming more acceptable and winning greater support from a wide cross section of the international community,” the PPP observed.
“The PPP calls on all the people of our country to support our government’s LCDS. It will benefit all, both nationally and internationally,” the statement urged.
