AS we are about to witness the handing over of one of Guyana’s historical building situated in Duke Street, Kingston to it’s proposed buyer I say to that individual you are about to be the proud owner of a gem and whatever your decision is or to any other owner down the line. I hope that consideration is given to maintain, restore and preserve that gem of a building.

Just recently, I was in shock to be aware that another gem in my books was demolished at the corners of Church and Thomas streets.

It’s a pity that the Roraima Group of Companies was not the buyer of the gem in question and had they become the owner, it could have been named “The Duke’s Manor” alongside The Dukes Lodge. I guess that from market research it didn’t make sense to invest at this point in time.

Nevertheless, I only hope that we don’t get carried away and just go around demolishing a section of our heritage. I would publicly announce that I am extremely grateful to the owner/s of the Heritage Museum down on the West Coast Demerara for their sacrifices in preserving as much as they can on Guyana’s Culture and History.
