GHB/Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Hockey League…
HIKERS Hockey Club registered a 3-0 win over GCC on Friday to win the Farfan and Mendes-sponsored 1st Division League. The much anticipated second round clash between the two top clubs, Hikers and GCC, started out less than impressively on Friday. With conditions less than optimum on a damp and thick field, both teams struggled to find their form in the opening minutes. Opportunities went a-begging as they failed to connect on the critical final passes of the opponents’ scoring circle.
GCC, however, found their rhythm after the first 15 minutes and worked the ball around the organised Hikers’ defence which nevertheless remained impenetrable.
The Hikers, on the other hand, with their own style of swift counter-attacking hockey, were the first to make good of their chances as Robert France slammed home a rebound from the narrowest of angles on the right, just seconds before the halftime whistle.
A powerful penalty corner strike by Timothy McIntosh just five minutes into the second half was too much for the GCC defender at the post and was deflected, leaving goalkeeper Marcus Fiedtkou with no chance.
The second goal brought a change in momentum as the Hikers grew in confidence and began to pressure the GCC deep defence in possession. With a much stronger second half for the Hikers, their efforts soon paid off with their third goal as left wing Randy Hope found himself unmarked in the GCC circle and swept in the team’s third.
With the 3-0 victory, the Hikers are now unreachable with eight points and have secured the coveted Farfan and Mendes men’s first division league trophy.
There is one match remaining in the competition which is now all for bragging rights as GCC take on Old Fort tomorrow from 16:45 h at GCC ground, Bourda.
