Citizens save 26 motorcycles from Marics fire

Fire of unknown origin gutted Marics and Co. Limited building at Lot 186 Charlotte Street, Lacytown, Georgetown, early yesterday morning.

The water-soaked gutted Marics building.
Owner Jean Mendonca told reporters that she received a telephone call yesterday morning about the fire, and is awaiting a report from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) who were summoned when flames erupted inside the building.

She added that the company has been in business for 50 years this month.

A group of public-spirited men managed to save 26 motorcycles from the building. Only two of the machines were damaged by the fire.

The men said that they observed smoke billowing from the building, and they cut the locks on the door and saved what they could have.

“The firemen did not want us to enter the building but we got a nipper and cut the locks and removed the motorcycles to safety,” one of the men explained.

Reports say the fire started about 2:15h and the GFS responded and managed to contain the flames.

A team of firemen and police was yesterday morning at the scene conducting investigations while the owners and employees stood outside.

Marics and Co. Limited is the sole agent of Honda motorcycles and housed the repairs department.
