SEEGOBIN” in his letter July 24th has finally stated that the core issue that has fuelled the on-going debate between religion and so-called science. “de Freitas”, a self-described humanist, has a problem with “bad religion” since it is not compatible with humanism. Christianity and humanism are opposites and will never be compatible. This has been the struggle since the dark ages.
The core of humanism is everything is centered on man. It teaches that man is essentially good and possesses within himself the capacity of truth and goodness. Man therefore is a god to himself. The answer lies within him. There are no absolutes in terms of good versus evil. Everything is relevant and the end justifies the means instead of the means justifies the end.
Christianity, on the other hand, teaches that there are absolutes known as the “ten commandments”, that man is inherently sinful and needs a savior, that the punishment for man’s sin was bore by God’s son who is the embodiment of truth, man can have relationship with his creator who empowers man to walk in goodness and truth, and to love his neighbor as himself.
There can be no framework work within religion for humanism. One is man-centered while the other is God-centered. Humanism does not believe that God is the creator of the universe. But where they were when the Lord said, “Let there be light”. Unfortunately, the debate continues because some will never believe.
