The Unexplained

Kreative Korner…
THE reverberation of my pounding heart sent shivers through my entire body.

It was prom night, the night all high school seniors look forward to.

For some, it was redemption night, or the night for the perfect prank. Yet for others, it was the ultimate ‘hook up’ night.

However, little did everyone know that this would be far more than just an ordinary prom.

What happened this night would pave the way for an interminable reminder that would be cemented in the memories of the graduating class of 2000.

Each teenage couple came into the auditorium of Paramount High, one after the other, all attired in dazzling dresses and sophisticated suits.

The juxtaposition of all that beauty with the unsightly aftermath was ironically the only ludicrous moment of the dreadful night, when fates were sealed.

It was 9:00pm exactly when the famous rock band, ‘Nickelback’ started playing their hit song, ‘So Far Away’, everyone cheered loudly and was having the time of their life.

Then suddenly, a deafening silence fell all over the auditorium. I looked around to see exactly what was happening, but noticed nothing out of the ordinary.

Not yet… at least.

Not yet! screamed the uncertainty that was a furtive beckoning in my mind.

And then, in the eerie silence, I heard a horrendous scream from a distance which kept getting closer and closer.

The screaming sounds injected a fear into me like a fire that was impossible to extinguish.

The auditorium’s door blew wide open and a cold breeze entered.

Seven beast-like creatures slowly made their way through the door.

I stood there watching… motionless… speechless.

These incongruous creatures had the likeness of something human, and yet… the jarring reality was obvious: They were not!

The creatures were hairy, almost wolf-like, with piercingly dreadful red eyes and long teeth that hung from their foaming mouths.

A terrifying image, made worse yet by the conspicuous huge dark layered winging.

Without hesitation, they flew in and engendered an ambiance that was electrified by fear; us feeble humans now clambering, screaming and running.

In swift motion that seemed surreal, they snatched seven girls and flew off.

The shock, pain, grief and FEAR gave way to a change in the atmosphere that was almost tangible.

The events of a once promising evening left deep agonizing wounds as the only vestige of something precious upended.

But the mordant reality was living with the pain of uncertainty; living in the purgatory of the unexplained…
