Olympic stars leading Jamaica to Berlin

KINGSTON, Jamaica – CMC – Jamaica’s track and field athletes will be aiming at this summer’s IAAF World Championship to relive the glory of their 2008 Olympic experience and their Beijing superstar Usain Bolt will be leading that bid.

Triple Olympic Games gold medallist Bolt and other Beijing individual champions Veronica Campbell-Brown, Shelly-Ann Fraser, and Melaine Walker are in a 46-member team named by the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) for the IAAF World Championships in Germany.

Bolt heads the 23-member male unit, and the women’s line-up includes Fraser, who led Jamaica’s medal sweep in the women’s 100 metres, two-time Olympic half-lap champion Veronica Campbell, who is defending 100-metre World Champion, and women’s Olympic 400-metre hurdles champion Melaine Walker.

The Jamaicans picked up an all-time-best 11 medals – six gold, three silver and two bronze – at the Beijing Olympics last summer to finish third in the track and field medals table, behind the USA (7-9-7) and Russia (6-5-7).

The 12th IAAF World Championships will be staged on August 15-23 in Berlin.

The coaching panel, headed by Bolt’s conditioner Glen Mills, also includes 1983 400-metre World Champion Bert Cameron and the team’s technical leader is Donald Quarrie, Jamaica’s 1976 Olympic 200-metre champion.

At the last World Championship, Jamaica captured one gold, six silver and three bronze for 10 medals overall in Osaka, Japan.
